“Keith Haring: 1978-1982,” a playful exhibition that focuses on the artist’s early career, is on view at the Brooklyn Museum.
In Memoriam Moebius
In the days when I still lived in Malakoff, town of Hauts de Seine (France), where I spent a large part of my life, I couldn’t imagine the great master so close to home, one that made me want to draw lettering in bubble style, the one who showed me how comics could be and dreamlike narrative quality while remaining simple. Anyway, Moebius lived 400 meters from home and I did not know it until my first album was released in 2000!

Friends of my family want to see my comic to congratulate me; they are musicians! I decided to find them one evening to show them my first comic book and of course give them a copy! We drink coffee when suddenly Paule, the hostess, said: “Tarek, you know our neighbor does the same job as you!” Astonished, I question her for more, thinking he is a writer beginner like me. And she adds: “This summer, workers have a lot of noise during construction in our neighbor… To be forgiven of buit caused by work, he gave us drawings.” I cut immediately to ask him the name of the unknown. She said with a smile: “It has a weird name: Mobus, perhaps Mobis?” There I am amazed and suggested the name: Moebius. She retorts: “Yes, that’s right! It is nice and frankly it draws well.” We continue to converse and, just before leaving, she suggests I go see him. I decline that invitation, too impressed to dare meet him, although I have so much to ask. Four years later, I no longer live in Malakoff and I am invited into a comics convention: Moebius was the guest of honor. By late afternoon, I have my “Silver Surfer”, “Le Garage Hermétique” and Arzach tight under my arm. A person working in a publishing house saw me coming towards him to Moebius. He said: ”Mr. Giraud does not sign his other comics only that comics Bluberry! “I said to him calmly that I am not a fan of this series and I want to meet him. Moebius sees me and I said to him, smiling that I have grew up near his home! His look changed and he began to tease the ”thug” who was the dam and then he offered me to join him… We are discussing life and the most ordinary things that are and then I dare ask him for dedications on all my albums. He said with a smile: ”phew, you’re the first of the day asking me for autographs on these comics!”… A silver surfer, a star, then a sergeant… I leave happy with my albums, proud of this moment privileged spent with him not to talk about comics but music, and books… I guess he is busy drawing where it is…
Bon Voyage and thank you again!
